Can my ring be resized? is one of the questions we're asked most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on the ring.

The good news is that many gold rings can be resized, but whether a ring can be made larger or smaller depends on several factors, including its design, the setting, the metal and the condition of the ring.

How Are Rings Made Bigger?

There are two main ways to increase a ring size.

For small adjustments, some plain bands can be carefully stretched to make them slightly larger. This is only suitable for certain rings and only by a small amount.

If a ring needs to go up by several sizes, a jeweller will usually cut the shank and add a matching piece of matching gold before soldering, reshaping and polishing the ring. This creates a stronger and more reliable result than stretching alone.

How Much Can a Ring Be Resized?

As a general guide, we say that most rings can be resized by up to three sizes larger or smaller.

However, this isn't a fixed rule. Every ring is different, and an experienced jeweller will always assess it before carrying out any work.

Factors that can affect whether a ring can be resized include:

• Whether the ring has gemstones.

• How the stones are set.

• Whether the shank is solid or hollow.

• The thickness of the band.

• Whether the ring has been resized previously.

Can Stone-Set Rings Be Resized?

Yes, many stone-set rings can be resized, but extra care is needed.

When a ring is made larger, the band stretches slightly, which can affect the tension holding the gemstones in place. If a ring is resized too many sizes, the settings may loosen, increasing the risk of stones becoming loose or falling out.

For this reason, jewellers will sometimes recommend limiting how much a stone-set ring is resized or suggest an alternative repair instead.

Does Resizing Damage a Ring?

When carried out by an experienced jeweller, resizing should not damage your ring.

After the work is completed, the ring is polished and refinished so it looks as close to its original condition as possible.

Occasionally, a very faint line may still be visible on the inside of the shank where the ring has been resized, but this is usually hidden from view when the ring is worn.

What If My Ring Has Already Been Resized?

If a ring has already been resized one or more times, further resizing may not always be advisable.

Previous solder joints and repairs can affect the strength of the shank, so the ring should always be assessed before any additional work is carried out.

In some cases, rather than resizing the existing shank again, a full shank replacement may be the better long-term solution. This replaces the worn or previously repaired section of the ring with a new piece of gold, helping to restore both its strength and appearance.
